Pounamu Greenstone, or jade, was treasured by the Maori for it's beauty and strength. Captain Cook wrote in his diaries of the Maori belief that pounamu (greenstone) was a fish that petrified into the valuable stone on being caught. Myths tell of pounamu being the the pet fish of Poutini that was harassed by Hine-tu-a-hoanga and her sandstone people. It fled it's homeland of hawaiki and found refuge on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Today the South Island is also known as Te Wai Pounamu "The Greenstone Waters".
