The tree started life as a fence post at least 77 years ago.
Locals remember the fence line from 1939 and the post that had been hacked off a nearby willow tree has become a symbol of determination.
What do Locals make of the famous tree? Their view is it has been growing slowly all that time . .and shows a determination to live.
About five years ago, Wanaka photographers and writers began pumping images of it to social media sites as bit of a joke and then Lake Wanaka Tourism put the tree on its photo trail.
It is now an Instagram success with its image beamed to millions of people.
